Pest Control Origins
Best Pest Control started out in 1981 as a part time hobby for its former
director, Bruce Gow (Search Engine Guy). Bruce started out as a policeman with
an old utility and basic pest control spraying equipment. As his business grew,
he added more equipment and upgraded his vehicle.
Around 1988 he had an idea of staging a competition he called, "The Great
Australian Bug Hunt". He put up $1,500 of his own money as prize money for the
largest catch of a spider, ant and cockroach. Newspapers and radio stations were
alerted to this novel competition and Bruce then approached the local Shopping
Centre Westpoint Blacktown for space to stage the competition.
The shopping centre was very enthusiastic about the idea and donated the space
on the proviso that he get as much exposure for the event as possible. He then
enlisted the aid of his father, Charles, friend Rudy Tschaut of All Guard
Pest Control and Bruce's
wife, Maree Gow to man the stalls. Large and peculiar insects and spiders were
captured and put into a display. The competition was extremely popular and
business became brisk as a direct result of this unique marketing.
More trucks were purchased and staff were hired to cope with the fresh demand.
Over the years Bruce & Rudy added to his "Spider and Insect Zoo" and displayed
it in all areas of Sydney to astonished crowds.
Eight trucks were now carrying the Best Pest Control banner and Bruce and his
staff collected many qualifications and certifications amongst them. Other pest
control firms started to notice their success and copied the idea. None
were as successful as Best Pest Control.
Search Engine Marketing Origins Bruce Gow noticed two observations around 1998.
The first was that Yellow Pages advertising was getting more and more
expensive. It was costing his company over $80,000 per year and he was
just barely returning this investment.
The second thing he noticed was that Google was getting to be a very good
marketing tool for his firm.
He created a website from the information he had already collected in a
franchise manual on pest control treatments and operations. He then went on a quest to
learn everything that was available about Google and internet Marketing and
applied this to his new website. Soon he was getting good rankings and
generating business leads. Bruce quickly dominated the internet on
searches for pest control, termite control, inspections and protection methods.
As a result, Best Pest Control ended up getting 12-15 strong leads per day for
all of these terms.
Competitors were soon buzzing with this accomplishment and it wasn't long
before offers were made to buy him out.
The new owner was Richard Sapsford from Enviropest, the largest privately
owned company in Australia. Bruce thought, "If I could do internet
marketing this well for pest control (which is an extremely competitive
industry), I can do it for any other industry. So that's how Search
Engine Guy got started. The rest is history.
